Certifications for Health Education and Public Health Professionals

Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)

CHES are those who have met the standards of competence established by The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc. (NCHEC) and have successfully passed the CHES exam.  The CHES designation is an indication of competency and commitment to the health education, health promotion and public health fields. Certified Health Education Specialists are dedicated to continuous professional development. SOPHE is a NCHEC-designated provider to offer continuing education contact hours (CECH) for continuing education events and activities.

COSOPHE provides many opportunities throughout the year for members to receive continuing education contact hours for the CHES and MCHES certifications. Check the webinar and events page for more information!

Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES)

MCHES are those that have met the academic eligibility in health education and regularly apply the Seven Areas of Responsibility in the field. A MCHES is an advanced-level practitioner that has:

1.     Met required academic qualifications, worked in the field for a minimum of five years

2.     Successfully passed a competency-based examination administered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.

3.     Satisfies the continuing education requirement to maintain the national credential


Become a Certified Health Education Specialist or a Master Certified Health Education Specialist

The 2016 exams are offered in Colorado at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO

Certified Public Health Credential (CPH)

The CPH credential distinguishes public health professionals at the cutting edge of an ever-evolving field. The credential demonstrates knowledge of key public health sciences, but also a commitment to the field through continuing education focused on emerging and established public health issues. For more information about this credential, please visit The National Board of Public Health Examiners.

At this time, COSOPHE does not offer continuing education contact hours for the CPH credential.

Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist (PAPHS)

Promote physical activity in public health by becoming an ACSM/NPAS Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist (PAPHS). In collaboration with the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Physical Activity Society (NPAS) – this certification focuses on building partnerships, developing initiatives, and advocating for programming that centers on physical activity as a path to stronger public health. For more information about competency areas of this certification, click here.

At this time, COSOPHE does not offer continuing education contact hours for the PAPHS credential.
